Before breakfast, read over
very carefully, and did a few of the examples, from page 110 to 119 and from page
208 to question 2, page 211, Volume 1, Hutton on Arithmetic and Geometry
proportions and progressions – It is just a fortnight today, since I laid aside
Hutton for all the abomination of letter-writing and to indulge my cold – I
must be more diligent –
Came upstairs at 11 – From 11
1/4 to 3 1/4 (very carefully) from ~86 to 195. Trachinia of Sophocles, and afterwards
from page 174 to 179 1/2 (Volume 2) Adams’s translation –
In the afternoon from 4 1/4
to 5 35/60, walked to and from the first turnpike beyond Lightcliffe –
In the evening, looking over
volume 6, Maurice’s Indian Antiquities –
Fine frosty day, very cold – Threatened
to snow as I returned from my walk. Barometer 1 1/4 degree below rain. Fahrenheit 31° at 9 p.m. –
Came upstairs at 10 50/60 –
