In my room at 8 – From 8 20/60 to 12 10/60 (breakfast at 10 10/60), read 1/2 the paper of this morning and read aloud to myself from page 29 to 102, Montlosier’s Dénonciation – After reading aloud a little, I felt to pronounce in French with much greater facility –

Finished dressing – Went out at 12 55/60 – Talked a few minutes to my aunt –

Took George and to Bertrand’s rue Neuve des petit Champs 33 – A long while there making different purchases – Bought a 30 pence veal pie Palais Royal.  Sent George home –

Sauntered slowly – Went to Amyot’s for a French Interpreter for my my aunt – He had not the one I wanted –

Thence to number 4 rue d’Anjou – The apartment let – Not sorry – Then one could not hesitate between this and that Place de la Madeleine –

Thence slowly to Place de la Madeleine – Found M. Sené at home – Agreed for the apartment – Said I had heard of him from one of his connaissances who was also one of the connaissances de mon amie Madame Barlow, that he, M. Sené, was riche, highly respected, etc. etc., an homme d’honneur – que j’avais dans lui toute la confiance du monde – Left it to him to furnish the apartment convenablement – Had heard also beaucoup de bien de Madame sa femme – Hoped we should all be mutually satisfied –

Some time looking about – A nice little room upstairs for George – Then adjourned to his sitting room and he sat down to write (in the mean time, Madame and ses filles had returned from walking) a sketch of what was agreed upon – To take the apartment from the __ of next month and keep it till next April but one 14 month in consideration of the expense he must be at in furnishing – Read it to myself.  I had calculated on having 1000/. to spend in divers things we should want, a carpet; fountain for the kitchen, etc. etc.  These things he will furnish – I had best take the apartment for an earlier period in consideration of all this –

Conversation with his wife and himself – He has not forgotten his Latin – Asked me if I knew that language – (my remarks had led to the question).  Said yes! a little – Mentioned Ovid as his favourite author – Yes! said I, one ought read his metamorphoses; but we in England prefer Virgil and Horace –

About 2 hours there – Got home at 5 1/4 – Told my aunt what I had done – Staid talking to her about 1/2 hour – She seems well satisfied – Except the first 2 1/2 lines, wrote the 1st 18 lines of this journal of today –

Dinner at 6 20/60 – Slept about an hour in the evening – Then settled my accounts and went to my room at __

1835 September Saturday 26 8 12 1/4 No kiss. Saturday, July 13, 1839 Travel Journal

1839 July Saturday 13 3 3/4 Fine morning – Fahrenheit 73° at 4 1/4 a.m. – Off at 5 – At Quickvorn [Quickborn] at 7 10/.. – Good cultivation, grass and corn about Hamburg – Asleep – at 5 10/..,   Stopt 10 minutes – At Quickborn, asleep – Not much of a place – Paid as might be – Some moor about 1/2 way between Hamburg and Quickborn and ditto ditto between Quickborn and Bramstedt, nice little rather scattered picturesque town where we stopt to breakfast from 9 20/.. to 10 50/.. – coffee – little cups and milk as in England and bread and butter – 1 mark each – Nice, clean public room and nice, civil people, but as usual could not, through Gross, understand the money till a civil English speaking Dane came in, who explained to me intelligibly – Now at 11 1/4 = 6 1/4 meilen to Kiel –  Just as we came away, the Eilwagen Diligence arrived – 5 or 6 gentlemen had come in, one or more ladies seemed to be still in the diligence – 3 compartments or divisions as in Fran...

Tuesday, July 14, 1829

1829 July 14th Tuesday 5 20/60   /   12 5/60 A cross last night thinking of Mariana.   Left for the post my letter written last night to Mr. James Briggs, Horton Street, Halifax, Yorkshire, Angleterre.   Gave George several commissions to do, to order horses at 2 1/4 etc. etc. and to be at the Jardin on my leaving the chemical lecture at 10 20/60. Breakfast at 6 20/60.   Walked to the boulevard, then per fiacre to the Jardin des Plantes in 34 minutes at 7 34/60.   The door shut.   Could   not go into the gallery, so missed the botanical lecture and walked about.   Sat some time reading lesson 35 Chimie Générale, then went up to the belvidere or temple and stood there 1/2 hour looking about me enjoying the fine view over and around Paris.   W ent into the Amphitheatre at 9 10/60. 35th chemical lecture began at 9 20/60; came away at 10 20/60.     24th lecture on the mollusques from 10 1/2 to 11 3/4, then 18th geologica...
