In my room at 7 55/60 – From 8 to 8 3/4, looking over my little French dictionary and one or 2  pages of Monlosier’s Dénonciation – From 8 3/4 to 10 10/60, wrote out the index of from the 16th ultimo to today – Had just done when Mrs. Barlow came – Sat talking – Breakfast at

Mrs. B had had no rest nor any dinner yesterday nor breakfast this morning, thinking what I had said yesterday evening on parting.  I should think ill of her, could not bear not to have my confidence and good opinion.  Consoled her. 

She had two cups of milk with me and a little bread and butter and I then had her on my knee, my right middle finger up and grubbled her well.  She said she was happier and perhaps my grubbling, for she was evidently much gratified.  I did her more good than anything –

Finished dressing – Wrote the last 5 lines – Had just done at 12 – Went to speak to my aunt for a few minutes – Said Mrs. Barlow would see her when we came back –

Then returned to Mrs. Barlow.  Gave her a largeish lump of sugar saturated with lavender drops.  Then, just going out at twelve and a half, and it was beginning to snow a little, so waited.

Began to play with her.  She said I had set her wrong.  I took her on my knee on the sofa and had my middle right finger up and grubbled her well.  Waited a while, and at it again.  A ring at the door interrupted us.  

Never dreaming of her taking more, asked if she would have more lavender drops.  Yes, if they would do her no harm.  Oh no, said I, and gave her another lump full.  She asked if I was not uncomfortable from having been interrupted.  I took the hint, had my right middle finger up her again as she stood, and grubbled her well, evidently much to her satisfaction. 

Then at 1, Mrs. Barlow and I went out –

To our butcher’s – Then looked at a troisième in rue Florentin at 2000/. per annum.  Plenty of rooms au troisième and quatrième – But too high – The kitchen au quatrième –

Thence to speak to Mrs. Barlow’s new porter, and came home at 1 50/60 – Madame Galvani had been here almost an hour – Mrs. Barlow came to my aunt while I sat with Madame G- – sent for a fiacre, and at 2 1/2, Mrs. B- and Madame G- and I off to look at the troisième, and the premier, rue de la Ferme No. 5 – If the proprietor will furnish the troisième convenablement à 3000/. per annum, Madame G- says take it – Monsieur not at home – saw Madame – He is a notaire – Notaires in France not at all genteel –

The premier, rue de la Ferme, would not do – a tuyau de commodités passes through the kitchen – Would be a great and offensive nuisance.

Then set Madame G- down at her own door – Mrs. B- and I, on her (Madame G-’s) recommendation, went into the rue de _____ ,where are plenty of apartments to let – Dear – Too far off –

Set Mrs. B- down at her own door – Got home at 4 1/2 – Talking to my aunt an hour – Do not wish to seem in too great a hurry about it, but think we shall take the troisième –

Settled my accounts.  Wrote from line 7 to 13 of today –

Dinner at 6 10/60 – Came to the drawing room at 7 50/60 – Talking to my aunt 1/2 hour, then slept till 9 – Then wrote the last 12 lines –

Very fine morning – At 12 35/60, a slight snow shower for about 10 minutes, then fine again – Another slight snow shower between 3 and 4, and then fine again –

Went to my room (to bed) at 10 10/60 –
