August

Friday 9

Looking over some views (not well lithographed but interesting as any views of Norway are to us) left on our table by our Ex-guide, Mr. Poulson who, it seems, would be glad to accompany us through Norway – The views (1/2 quarto opening à l’Italien) printed here in 1836 “Pàa Forfatterens Forlag . Troft hos Ludwig Risum”.  Norge, fremstillet i lithographerede Billeder Efter Naturen.  Af P.F. Wergmann (Billederne ere ledsagede med beskrivende Text) Første Bind.

Page 12 vide view of Rørvigkeleven I Lister. Lister is a district along the sea in Christiansands = Stift.  Vide in my Göttreborg – bought map Mandals At. i.e. Mandals Arapt (or province or shire) – How striking that there should be in Norway a District or little division called ListerIs this an ancient name?

The Scene is a cottage and water and zigzag road up mountains one side of narrow valley – Ann and I walked about the room perhaps 1/2 hour till 9 3/4, then till 12 10/.., she reading Laing’s Norway that we  found on our table on returning home this afternoon and making extracts, and I reading over Mr. Poulson’s papers (nothing particular) and then inking over this book some pages back –

Dull but fair till about 7 p.m. and then some rain but not very much – Fahrenheit 67 1/4° now at 12 1/4 tonight –
