October
Friday 15
Breakfast at 11 5/..
Mr. Turnbull, our consul here,
called about 12 for about an hour, and the Reverend Thomas Harvey, the clergyman
here, soon after – The latter, gentlemanly young man – Mr. Turnbull very well –
Will give Lady Stuart a letter to our vice consul at Toulon to see the arsenal
and port – Real maraschino from Zara – Rondeau and Viela, confiseurs, rue
de Noailles –
All out in a landau at 2 1/2
– Went to Rondeau’s – Bought chinoise, excellent at 1/80 a pound, dried figs ditto,
and all the rest same price – Bought in quantities of 25 pounds, would be 32
sols per pound –
Then drove to the cathedral,
said to be the oldest church in France, but after so many reparations, this
does not appear – Good church and neatly kept within – broad not high
nave and side aisles ? and side chapels and short transepts – All round arches
inside –
Then drove past the Lazare,
as in going, large, singular looking pile of buildings of outer joined walls –
Then drove to a fabrique
de coral. Lady Stuart bought a little
bunch of coral with long ends at 30 sols a link or 12 links for 18/.
Then drove to the botanic garden. 20 minutes there, nothing to see. Very small plot of ground –
Then drove about the streets,
particularly the Grande rue, long very narrow street, and came in at 6 –
Dinner at 6 10/.. –
Came to my room at 12 1/4. Fell asleep over writing these last notes
till 1 1/4 –
Fine day – but coolish –
