[Marginal note:] genista spinosum prickly broom Juniperus Silicia of which I have so many

berries – olea fragrans that smells like strawberries.

Packing, counting out money, etc. till after 8 – Fahrenheit 64 1/2 ° at 9 1/2 a.m., at which hour, breakfast –

All went to the jardin at 11 – Get at Toulon Guide de l’Etranger dans l’arsenal à Hières and aux Salines chez Bellue Toulon 1828 (1 volume duodecimo )

Mention of St. Baume in number 1, Janvier this year, Revue de Provence – Marseille typographie de Feissat ainé and Demonchy rue Canebière No.19, 1830 – It is near Gémenos and the Chateau d’Albertas – Devrière Gémenos d’ouvre la vallée de Saint Pons – Là commence le pélerinage de Saint Baume – and get ‘L’abbaye de Saint Pierre d’Almanau,’1828 a little Notre Dame at Hières), Marseilles, Antoine Ricard rue Canebière No. 19 –

Then went to the garden and house of Mr. Stultz – Large, good garden with much trellis for shaded walk and manège 40 yards by 15?

The house very handsomely furnished.  M. de Boutigny said he had 7 cent mille livres de rentes – 2 pictures with watches in steeples and musical boxes behind them – He was fitting up the top of the house as a lookout breakfast room – Meant to have tapisserie viager from Paris for it – Handsome copper column stove that consumes its own smoke from Paris –

Then sauntered about the garden of Mr. Bouingnon? The chevalier with us.

Then home at 1 50/.. and sat in my own room an ? dawdling over 1 thing or other –

To have been off at 3 – but kept waiting till 4 8/.. – The chevalier again to take leave – Tiresome, but yet gentlemanly in his crackiness –

I leave Hières with regret not to have made much more of my time.

Charming drive from Hières to Toulon – A little of the mistral all the way, but not unpleasant to me, who found it neither cold nor too strong –

Passed the 2 gateway gates into the town  and alighted at the Croix d’Or at 5 48/.. Dinner at about 6 1/4 – Long talk about deciding what to do – Lady Stuart’s banker here is bankrupt – She must go to draw at Marseilles and I must stay to draw here.   To help her out, to pay the Hieres gardener and the Bills here etc.  Tiresome work we had in deciding. I said I would do anything, only begged to know what she meant to do, then I could easily arrange for myself.  No, she wanted to know my plans.  Well, said I, will you plan for me.  No, she would not plan for others.  I stuck to nothing but being off tomorrow.  She would have me go to Marseilles.
