Up at 7 1/2 in fact, but lay
on the bed an hour after sitting on the
pot three quarters. Breakfast at 10
–
Out at 11 1/2 to the garden
of the late M. Filhe – A drop of soda in a little bottle coloured pink,
said Lady Stuart, a remedy for cramp in the stomach. I had said if all trades failed, I would turn
quack doctor – A sour orange took the colour out of her bonnet string – Turned
it red – She said a drop of hartshorn would restore it –

M. Filhe will go to
Algiers perhaps next May a steamer
once a week from Toulon in 2 or 3 days – Perhaps 46 hours on the way –
At the garden till about 4
3/4, then Lady Stuart and Louisa and I took a rambling walk up the hill South
East of the town, and came in at 5 50/.. –
Dinner at 6 10/.. – Tea about
8 –
Came to my room at 12 1/2 –
Handsome said at Toulon I should
like to go to Algiers – Talked a little of it this evening and of Spain – Lady Stuart
mentioned that the Miss Fieldings talked of going to Madrid – a riding town
– Said if there was any chance of Lady Gordon’s going, should prefer her –
Talked of the Swiss journey. Told of going veturino and of the two
quarrels with Rodolph, which led to my knowledge of horses. Said would take Cameron and go to Toulon per
malle poste and get servant there for Algiers.
She said I had better get Charles Yorke to take me about.
Very fine day – Fahrenheit 65 1/2 now at 12 3/4 p.m.
Marginal note: Valerian, said Lady Stuart, that sets cats
wrong.
