Down at 9 3/4, at which hour,

Coze flirting with Vere. She likes me certainly. Dawdling away the morning as usual. Lady Stuart in her room –
At one, the letters came, and
made my escape from Mrs. and Miss Mangin and the two Dames –
Letter 3 pages and ends and
under the seal from Mariana – They go to Paris on Wednesday morning – Wrote 3 pages in answer – Sorry the chances
seemed against our meeting there on the return – I should be off from
here on Thursday, and from London the Wednesday following – Sent my letter by
George at 4 –
Lady Stuart and I out at 4
50/.. – to Kingston and farther on to Boyle farm.
Home at 6 1/2 – Dressed – Dinner
at 7 – Coffee – Looking over prints – Lady Stuart writing – An hour’s music.
Talking of Vere, said I should perhaps pick up someone
in Italy. She said she not like that,
did not wish anyone to have her place. On
coming back to dinner, found she had put a bunch of roses from her own garden
into my tooth glass, and her manner is getting more affectionate. While left
alone this morning, told her a little of my sister, could not have Cameron, was
making my will without naming Marian or my father, confidential.
She said on Sunday, when I said how cautious she was and that her thoughts and feelings were in as many folds as a pear that opened but who could tell whether there was a kernel or not, well shake it and see. I rallied her about it today, saying it was the only consolation I had. She certainly does not dislike me.
Speaking of marriages etc. this morning, she would think from my manner I should have three thousand a year.
Very fine day – Came upstairs
at 12 1/2. Fahrenheit 60° now at 1 20?..
tonight –
