October
Saturday 1
Off at 11 5/.. On board in 2
or 3 minutes – Perpetual taking good deal of wind – Sickish – Over in an hour –
Saw the house and walked about till reimbarked at 2, and no tacking, and back
in 1/2 hour –
Then walked along the quay – New
fish shambles – All fish obliged to be exposed for sale there for an hour from
8 in winter and 7 in summer before being taken to any other market –
Went into timber yard. Memel pine (red and white), best red 2/5 per
square foot – American red, white, and yellow – best red, 2/1/ The other sorts, 1/8 a foot – The Memel very
superior in quality – Much harder closer grain – More turpentine in it – Lasts
much longer – American – much softer and more porous (such is the difference of
climate – too far north for the wood to [be] so well formed) – To get rid of
bugs, the timber master said, the ships are fumigated with sulphur and
charcoal, chiefly the latter – Every crevice stopped – But dangerous to go into
the place till well ventilated again –
Margin: Brownsea island 1000
acres 7 miles round – 25 deer – Gave Mr. Sturt £8000. Has refused £10000 – Bad land – All firs –
