October

Saturday 16

7 1/2

2 40/..

Marginal note: Good view of the islands Donnadieu, Ratonneau, and the Chateau d’If on the latter.

Up at 6 for 1/2 hour, then on the bed and partly in it till 7 1/2 –

Took Cameron and went out at 8 3/4 – To the port – Bought little thermometer, Fahrenheit and Reaumur – All along to the fort of Saint Jean, that of Saint Nicolas on the other side –

Thence along the sea past the Cathedral (stopt to look at it a moment) to the Lazaretto – A commander of a vessel to Algiers having said that perhaps the concierge could give me some intelligence about things from Algiers – Spoke to the concierge, and just peeped into the interior of the place.  The people secured by an outer and inner wall and an iron railing ? within those to secure the people ? from the concierge – There seemed a large corps de batiment and and a good deal of ground in walks and garden, but some officers walking about as if in prison –

Then back to the port – Boated it across, and walked back on the other –

Sauntered along the rue Canabière and bought Marseilles guide chez Chardon – And got home at 10 40/.. Found them all just sat down to breakfast –

About 12, M. Turnbull called for 3/4 hour – Barilla, or artificial soda, manufactured here, etc. Duty on wine in bottles to England 1/6 per bottle, the duty on the glass bottle included in that – and 7/6 or 1/2 that duty per gallon in the wood –

Lady Stuart had letter from old Lady Stuart – Low about herself and the breaking of her ankle – thinks Miss MacLean cannot last long –

All went out in the remise landau at 2 1/2 – Drove to another fabrique de coral in vain.  N’existant pas –

Then to the baths – Got there at 3 – backwards and forwards work about having 2 hot baths and at last went away without them.  2/50 for hot – 1/50 for cold – Little tub-shaped places for people to sit in cut out of the puddingstone rock with an awning thrown over the framework that there is for that purpose.

Then sauntered along the shore picking up shells – Then drove along the streets to see the town and the promenade along the sea.  Walked up to the top of the hill for the view over the port town and country.  Delighted with the view – The sun set beautifully over the islands.

Home at 6 – Dinner in 1/4 hour

Very fine cold day –

Coffee about 8 this evening.
