Breakfast at 10 – Lord Eglington
came about 11. He went out with us at 12
for an hour along the port –
Off from Toulon Croix d’Or
at 2 –
Charming drive amid beautifully
grouped rounded, wooded limestone hills through a perfect garden of vines,
olives, figs, pomegranates, almond trees, and mulberries to Hières, and
alighted at 4 –
Cool, balmy, delightful air –
Quite that of a Southern Climate – the 1st time we have so decidedly this – No
view of the sea from Toulon here, till a beautiful one on entering the little
picturesque town Domène, north, by fine conical hoary limestone hill covered with
ruined towers and well of old chateau and creeping down to the foot the little
town.
Charlotte with me – The
delightful air even from Toulon made me sleepy the 1st 1/2 the way –
Turned right and left the
Nice road at 2 50/.. – Walked a little in the garden below the house of dark
green flourishing orange trees full of fruit quite and some yellowish –
Saw the people turning a stream
of water down among the trees, a rich flat of vines, olives etc. of a line from
here down to the dark blue sea – Not much shipping craft to be seen – The islands
look fine – Very beautiful view –
Then walked on the road towards
the port, and home in an hour at 6 – Dinner at 6 10/.. – Sat talking, though Lady
Stuart meant to have gone to bed very early, till 12 40/.., when came to my room
–
Very fine day. Fahrenheit 67° at 1 1/2 p.m. and 65° now at 1
1/4 tonight –
