Read Satire v., liber 1, Horace,
the thing wanted – Settled a little of bills – Breakfast at 10 1/4 – Came up to
my room in about an hour, and then till 12 1/2, settling bills – Fahrenheit
(now at 12 1/2 p.m.) 66°, was 64° at 10 a.m.
All off (3 asses) at 12 1/2 –
Got to the sea in 1 10/.. and back at 6 10/.. in 1 1/4 hour – Lady Stuart rode
all the way there and back –
Beautiful round topped hills
covered with stunted northwest blown pinus maritima, but pretty, and pistachia
lentisca and myrtle to the water’s edge, and Juniferus Silicia, and rosemary and
tamarisk dauphine on the plage – Not much sand, but enough of these or
coarse sandstone grit rocks to allow walking close along the water –
The islands looked beautiful
– All picked shells – and sauntered about for 3 hours –
Carcarane a lieue from where
we alighted – Carcarane is a nice little port and town for bathing, where several
English are – Great pity we did not go there.
Dressed in 18 minutes – Dinner
at 6 25/.. –
The gardener (Filber) came to
us this evening to tell the names of plants – Spoke of La Baume (a convent of
La trappe there and fine plants) 10 lieues d’ici. We ought to have seen – It is near St.
Maximin – between Brignoles and le Luc? –
Nothing particular said. A knight of the garter never wears his riband over his coat but in presence of the King. Lady Morgan a vulgar writer, but had seen the
people she writes of. which many writing of lords and ladies never had. One found out by saying a peer wore his
riband over coat at county ball. Had
said in the morning, that not translateable, Horace, Satire v., liber 1 –
Came to my room at 12 1/2.
Very fine, cool pleasant day
– Sat up looking over Marseilles bill and the above notes of today till 1 1/2,
at which hour, Fahrenheit 64° – Then again at the bill till 2 20/..
She wants me to go to Italy and
write something with references to the classic not to a book till I have
written my own. A person well informed
like me could make it a pleasant book.
Speaking of George in returning, she accidentally said
he was “not personable.”
I said if I was at Athens when they
were at Rome, I would join them.
