8 10/..
2 10/..
[Marginal note]: Very pretty road to the Salines – Do not see
the sea – but the hills on the right beautiful –
Breakfast at 10 – Came upstairs
at 11 1/2 –
At 12 1/2, all the rest on asses,
I walked, all off to the Salines and arrived there at 2 – A little rain sent us
to the Café – Very civil people. We had
a bottle of vin cuit, i.e. boiled like housekeeper’s wine in England – 2
or 3 houses besides the café of the inspector and douanes –
Larger square sand covered
shallow tanks for the Salt – The recolte over now. No boiling – All is done by the heat of the sun
? Little sheds to put the salt in –
A Russian ship in the road
and several little French things, brigs and a felucca loading with wine for
Nice – To sail on Thursday morning. With
good wind as today , would be there in 9 or 10 hours –
A few drops more of rain, which
spoilt our wanderings on the flat shore –
Off at 3 40/.. and at the
garden at 5 20/.. – At the garden 40 minutes –
Home at 6 – Dressed. Dinner at 6 1/4 – Came to my room at 12 3/4
Cozy talk, talking of women of the town being
agreeable. Said the story of lais ζωη και ψυχη μου spoke volumes.
Then speaking of Madame Galvani, Lady Stuart thought I
should go with her to theatres. No, not
quite certain enough about her. However,
much liked her. She might go with others
with whom she would be under restraint.
Would be under none with me.
Then got to telling of my being at Madame de Boyve’s
and at Madame de Rosny’s and how Mrs. Barlow had never written. Told all truly, but as well as I could. I wonder what she thinks of me, However, we all get more and more at our ease
together. She sits up so late, night after
night, talking and hearing talk and I think she must like me.
Fine, cold, rather windy day
– The mistral – A few drops of rain, a shower just after passing the douane in
going today – Fahrenheit 65 1/2 now at 2 35/.. tonight –
Should go to the sea below Notre
Dame for shells – From there to the nearest island 1/2 hour’s row – It is the
promenade people take in winter – All the islands inhabited – but du Vent or Du
Titan the least – Should go in May for flowers – I should go to the mountain
just behind the town?
