Tuesday 4
Off from HighCliff at 10 1/2
– Nice (any rural drive 9 miles) to Lymington – (Lymington 13 to Christchurch)
– From Lymington to Hurst 7 miles by water – Would be too rough –
Walked (off at 11 55/..) to Quay
Haven in an hour across the mesh – For
there 1 man little boat in 25 minutes to the castle. 18 nines and 6 twenty fours, at the top, 40
steps – Octagon – Surrounded by octagon, open story at the bottom – Spiral
staircase up the middle – 6 preventive men – Mrs. Thistlewwaite left Lymington
yesterday – To return – 25 minutes seeing castle – Good view of Isle of Wight
to the Cowes point and of the needles and Christchurch church Tower – 12 miles
off and Hengistbury Head –
Off back to Quay Haven at
2 and over in 25 minutes – Then, doubtful of the way, joined a man who was
walking fast. Would not delay him, so
walked back the 3 miles in 3/4 hour – Hottish work and thoroughly heated –
Back after found there were no horses – Walked about very pretty church yard with walks through it
– went to King’s, the bookseller, and bought map of Isle of Wight and guide of
that and Southampton –
Came in at 4 1/2. Still no horses –
Off at 5 8/.. Pretty enough
drive, partly and lastly through the New Forest, but too dark to see much after
5 3/4 –
At Lyndhurst at 6 20/.. – An
hour before could get tea –
