October

Tuesday 4

Off from HighCliff at 10 1/2 – Nice (any rural drive 9 miles) to Lymington – (Lymington 13 to Christchurch) – From Lymington to Hurst 7 miles by water – Would be too rough –

Walked (off at 11 55/..) to Quay Haven in  an hour across the mesh – For there 1 man little boat in 25 minutes to the castle.  18 nines and 6 twenty fours, at the top, 40 steps – Octagon – Surrounded by octagon, open story at the bottom – Spiral staircase up the middle – 6 preventive men – Mrs. Thistlewwaite left Lymington yesterday – To return – 25 minutes seeing castle – Good view of Isle of Wight to the Cowes point and of the needles and Christchurch church Tower – 12 miles off and Hengistbury Head –

Off back to Quay Haven at 2 and over in 25 minutes – Then, doubtful of the way, joined a man who was walking fast.  Would not delay him, so walked back the 3 miles in 3/4 hour – Hottish work and thoroughly heated –

Back after found there were no horses – Walked about very pretty church yard with walks through it – went to King’s, the bookseller, and bought map of Isle of Wight and guide of that and Southampton –

Came in at 4 1/2.  Still no horses –

Off at 5 8/.. Pretty enough drive, partly and lastly through the New Forest, but too dark to see much after 5 3/4 –

At Lyndhurst at 6 20/.. – An hour before could get tea –
