September

Wednesday 28

Off from Highcliff at 12 –

At the hotel Christchurch at 12 19/..

At Bournemouth at 12, very pretty, whitewashed hamlet 4 3/4 miles from Poole – Neat Inn – A gentlemen’s house ? and 2 or 3 farms with carriage road down to the sea.  15 minutes walk – Fine view of Hengistbury Head, too hazy for Isle of Wight except just the fanteuil – On the other side [flagstag] and preventive station –

Save on the little hill above Wick other side Christchurch and out of and above Bournemouth, no sea view – Heath or moor, newly planted (firs) all the way to Poole –

Off again at 1 1/2 – 1 mile from Poole and afterwards, fine sea view – Brownsea island ? land and a beautiful break in the bay –

Poole very neat handsome brick town some large very good houses, a good deal of shipping in the harbour and several vessels building –

Changed at the old Antelope – Wareham neat little town at 3 20/..

At 4 5/.. Corfe, large limestone built village with 2 or 3 little Inns – drove up to the castle gateway but too rainy to get out – Large ruins covering top of mound between the 2 ranges of hills that form narrow just here and the great valley.

Margin: cliffs gravelly as at Highcliff but not quite so bad.
